Summarize the AUTHOR'S main point or idea:
In this article, the author explains the causes and effects of phytoplankton blooms all across the world. He tells how the problem has developed from back in the mid 1800's to today mainly because of us. Our increasing number in population has helped to make this topic even worse and is continuously adding on. The waste we excrete still has enough nutrients that help these plants grow and spread even further out. The fertilizers we use to grow our crops runs off to different water systems to increases the population of phytoplankton. These thick layers covering open water block the sunlight from hitting other marine life and plants beneath the surface. These organisms will then eventually die due the the lack of oxygen and bacteria will consume them using even more oxygen in that area. These environments underwater that can no longer hold oxygen to support marine life are known as dead zones. Dead zones are spreading further across the globe and will affect us all greatly due to the lack of oxygen the ocean will be taking in in maybe the next years to come if we don't respond about this soon.

This article just surprised me even more fact after fact. And the information this article was giving, I don't think was the comfortable. I made me think of the number of things we could do to stop an issue like this, because that is really the only thing that can be done anyway...just look for solutions. I'm not sure how many times I have to say that obviously overpopulation has become not only a problem, but a habit for us. Seeing how these ideas of developing fresh water and leaving the trash behind, the daily amount of food we take in affects the world we live in so many ways, you won't remember them all. Increasing number in phytoplankton is really only the beginning of our problems, and that already apparently seems to be a major one.
So What?
Why do excessive nutrients harm water systems:
-Phytoplankton Bloom
-Lower oxygen levels
-Dead zones affect marine life
Says Who?
-Scott W. Nixon
What does remind me of?
-This reminds me of the movie WALL-E and how
the changes in the environment made all life
on earth inhabitable.
What if...?
Phytoplankton blooms covered almost
all of the ocean:
-Almost all life on earth would be uninhabitable
-the ocean wold be a dead zone
-It would take earth a long time to become stable again
